Hello!
I recently won an auction for this instrument and appreciate any information about it a resident "clarinet expert" can provide. From searches on this board and the Internet, I know this is a professional clarinet, made in the late 1920s.
Here are instrument specs:
Serial #: 1664
construction: barrel (not tuning), body, bell, mouthpiece
engraving: Depose
Henri Selmer Paris logo
France
Sole Agents U.S.A. & Can.
Selmer Elkhart Indiana logo with lady & lyre
Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.
"S" stamped on underside of a righthand pinky key
Clarinet keys are identical to my 1950's B&H Edgware.
Though this Selmer plays with some mary-rigging, I'll likely get it overhauled, if recommended (I am impressed now with its play).
Thank you very much for any information on my Selmer clarinet.

Welcome, Mary Jo, While many of us have at least one metal cl, our "resident expert" Jim Lande has MANY, and has put his listings into our archives [use the Search technique]. Its useful for questions, like you ask. Beyond that, you'll get help from some of our "regulars" having the same, or similar, insts, mine are both of the student-marching grade, just "fair". Yours should be very good, Luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks for replying, Don. I feel better about my "expense." Of course, those forum reports of Jim's are largely responsible for my decision to buy a metal clarinet. From those threads, I glean I don't have the most desirable Selmer metal clarinet, which seems to be the one with more separate parts and a tuning barrel. Still, this is a pretty neat old instrument and I'd like to find out all I can about this model.
I appreciate your assistance.

Jim Lande's reports played a major role in my recent acquisition of a 1930s Selmer Paris five-piece metal clarinet with the tuning barrel. It is in the shop for a complete overhaul including tweaking the action and any intonation issues that we might discover. I got it for shock value. I also hope to create a web site with more information on this beastie because it is so hard to find information on metal clarinets.
The tech said that a number of years ago there was a test done and most people couldn't tell the difference in sound between a metal or a wood clarinet. I'd love to see the data on that.
Edit: I got a pointer to www.silver-clarinet.com which seems to have a lot of info and great pics. Enjoy.
