does anybody know how these zonda reeds are compared to Vandoren V12. bassically are they better, longer lasting, of similar strengths, etc.....

In my experience they're very different than Vandoren or Grand Concert (I find Grand Concert & V12s similar). Some people love them. I personally never found one that sounded good on my particular setup, but it seems I'm in a minority, at least for those that reported results. Search the BBoard and the Klarinet Archives for a great deal of information on the Zondas.

I have about 10 Zonda's right now. For me, it was between the Marca Tradition Select and the Zonda's...I choose Marca. For Zonda vs. V12 the Zonda are much more consistent. I don't know about the sound compared though. I have been away from V12 for a while now. I think the Zonda are very similar to the Marca Traditions but the Zonda make ME sound a little more tinny...you'll just have to try them out.

My experiance is that Z's are relatively consistant and play ok at first, but do not last. I, too, prefer Marca Trads for their consistancy and durability but have currently returned to using V-12s (#4) for their superior sound. Reed hunting is a true "sport" for clarinetists--good luck with your's.

Zonda's a VERY consistant, so you do get what you pay for. I've been using the same 5, in rotation, for about a month now. Still going great! I also like the little velvet holder they come in. You should try them for yourself!

Zondas are great, if they work nicely with your setup and you don't mind shelling out the bucks for them. They have a nasty reputation for having short playtime (which I have found to be true in my case. They play wonderfully out of the box for me, but I stick with V12s in the longrun. They tend to be better for a longterm investment. I also like these Rigotti Golds that Woodwind and Brasswind has been selling. Similar, at least in my case, to the playquality of the Zondas, with much better longevity.

I switched over from Vandoren V12s to Zondas about two years ago. I’m puzzled by the opinions that they don’t last very long. I date and number each reed with a permanent marker when I begin to break them in. I was surprised to find that typically the Zondas last me about three to four months (in a rotation of 4 reeds). I had one Zonda reed that was so beautifully balanced and responsive I practically went into mourning when it gave out after 10 months. Of course they need a little work with the reed clipper and sand paper as they age, and I also wash them in peroxide every few weeks.
On the down side, it seems like they play very hard out of the box compared to other brands, but they eventually settle in after several cycles of soaking/rubbing/playing.
