We've all noticed, I'm sure, that left handed stringed instrument players can adapt their instruments to accomodate themselves. But, brass and reed players are stuck with what the manufacturers dictate; that all wind instruments are designed for right handed people.
I'm not left handed, rather just curious whether this aspect of 'modern' wind instruments has been explored.

I have a copy of a three-keyed Scherer baroque D-clarinet with a turnable bell-joint made for both LH and RH. It was quite common that early clarinets and other WW-instruments were made like that since a standard wasn't set yet.

Hi, Alphie.
I know the early three-five keyed horns could be either RH or LH. I just wondered whether any modern system horns have been made to accomodate LH players. I followed Mark's direction above to find that LH instruments do exist in more recent times. I've never seen one however.

Considering the rapid alternatin of the hands on clarinet, I don't really know if "handedness" comes into the picture. I think I use my hands pretty evenly when playing - but I've never really counted "10 notes on the left, 10 on the right, 1 left, 2 right, ...". Any takers? I'm too busy to try 8^)

A ways back I bought one of the music minus one selections
for clarinet. I couldn't help marveling at the great
selection of left handed clarinets shown in the cover
photo.

Ron, I think you have to develop more skill with your left hand with the actual design, on woodwinds instruments, regardless if you are rigth or left handed. I think this matter has no importance.

I'm left handed and really it's not an issue, if anything you need more dexterity in the left hand to manouver around the throat notes.
The only possible problem could be supporting the instrument on a weaker right wrist but this is more of a sax problem really.
