 Festive Overture

I'm very excited to announce that our band is playing the Festive Overture by Shostakovich this year for our Spring concert! I've heard a few recordings, but does anyone know a site where I can hear it online? Thanks!

Lots of orchestral recordings of this fine work. The orchestra version is in A major instead of the band key of Ab. I've performed it both ways: sure is a lot easier to play the fast scales in C on the A clarinet than it is to play them across the break in Bb on the Bb clarinet!

Hi,

For a whole lot of good HS band recordings, try the Auburn, AL HS Band website at

http://www.auburnschools.org/ahs_band/music.html

This is an outstanding HS band with a long record of superior ratings. Some of the examples are older but the newer recordings are much better.

I played the opening clarinet solo in H.S. I was 15, and I remember practicing it for hours cause I loved it. Our band played it fast and furious. You'll have a great time with this piece.

We're playing that on November 13...I found it online but the link is at home (and I am at work). I'll try to remember to post it later. It's a Boston Pops file and it is FAST.

Go to http://thefim.com/classicalconcerts.asp and search (CTRL F) for festive. (By the way, I found this quickly with a Google search on Shostakovich Festive MP3.)

Orchestral performances usually go like a bat out of hell -- 144 or even faster.

That's for sure. It feels like hell even at 130.

If you can accept large mp3 files, I can send you a copy of the college of lake county wind ensemble performance of this piece. It is a pretty quick piece.

Does anyone know where I can go on the internet to find a excerpt of the solo? I can't wait to play it!
