Hello,
Wondering if some of you may be able to offer some information regarding this topic. I currently play on a Fobes 4L mouthpiece, and to date it is the most free blowing mouthpiece I have owned--its great. I have been looking to get something a little smaller in size, though as the 4L is at times larger than I would prefer. So, my assumption was that by going down in tip opening I would be able to maintain the same free blowing-ness but offer a little more control and centered-ness to the sound. However, when tyring various pieces (including a Fobes 2L), M13Lyre, Eddie Daniels (1) I have not found this to be true--in fact, these seemed more resistant. Is this perhaps more related to the facing length than just the tip? I am holding out hope for trying some more Fobes pieces including another 2L in hopes I can find one that has the same ease as my 4L but in a smaller tip opening. Thanks in advance for your consideration...!

Dear Ving,
I'm sure there are many past posts but this is a current topic for me since I have been "collecting" again. The ratio of the curvature of the lay as compared to length vs. opening can vary wildly within the same manufacturer/maker. Also, so many other factors influence the way a mouthpiece feels such as the curvature and depth of the baffle, width of tip rail, width of side rails, etc, etc, Look at the Behn mouthpiece website, particularly the Vintage model website - lots of good information there.
That having been said one maker whose whole line is consistant in feel is Ben Redwine and his Genusa Excellente models. The ONLY difference from one size to the other was how much air you want to put in it. Or looking at it a different way, how strong a reed you prefer to use. No single mouthpiece will work for everyone (thank god), so you need to try different ones for yourself.....just make sure you try this one :-)

First, I would contact Clark for his thoughts, his email is on his website. His mouthpieces are generally pretty free. You may need to choose a different reed or tailor it a bit differently (lighten the tip or other area) to get the same response you are looking for. The trade off is that you will likely be able to get a bit more focus from the closer tip.

Hello again,
Well, I have taken the plunge and am trying out some new Fobes facings--I have two CF plus and one 2L, which I believe is the one I tried out earlier. Anyhow, I am open to suggestions on reeds for these if anyone has any. I may email Clark Fobes as well. I am finding I like the response of the 2L as it is closer to what I am used to--this could be due to the long facing maybe? I like the closeness of the CF plus, but I don't like the stiffer reed I need to use. My question--is it common to use a softer reed on a longer facing, or is it usually the other way around. The size difference between the two is not much, so what I am sensing must be the facing difference.
