I've never looked at our tiny country this way...but I presume that you're right Ron. It seems to me that almost everybody on this board has visited Holland??? Who has visited our tiny country so far?

Clarnibass, I hope that you’ve enjoyed you’re trip! How did the repair go?

I've been there, no surprise I think :-)

And OpusII you know how 'we think' about your tiny country ;-)

But seriously how was the Bass clarinet convention. I wanted to go but couldn't because playing a tournament/concert + extra rehearsals over the weekend. Is is worth visiting ?

Played at the concertgebouw several times--always a pleasure; I even enjoyed the demonstrators acting up in the aisles! Add to this one of the nicest airports in the world (schipol) and great food. My only gripe: could never find a restaurant that served rijstaafel (sp) after a concert at night!

did you see my friend Andrew Uren play? i know he's into "ultra modern" music that may not be to everyones taste, but i believe that he also performed a concerto for Bass Clarinet and Cello by Anthony Ritchie- a very accessible work, that i think is a real gem. (he might have had to change the program though- i believe that there was a problem getting orchestra/rehearsals for the Ritchie.....)
would be great to hear what you thought of the performers

Here are some pictures of the clarinetists from the concerts.

Pic 2 - Dan Harris with a vibraphone player. They played almost entirely improvised. As always with improvisation, some is great and some is not. It had some great moments.

Pic 3 - The Schorn & Puntin duo. They were amazing, I bought a CD. They had very interesting music especially the rhythm. Reminded the rhythm of Sclavis' music. Schorn played those contrabass clarinet and contrabass saxophone (or whatever it was, it is in the picture) like they were easy soprano instruments. Puntin used some nice effects, that yellow thing under the clarinet looking thing (not sure what intrument it is) and he had two bass clarinet neck, and one gave him a guitar-like distortion. The crowd went nuts after their concert. One of the best concerts in the convention.

Pic 4 - The american player Evan Ziporyn. He was the best one in the first concert, and played a great piece by David Lang. In his masterclass he explained he still plays his 1980's Selmer bass clarinet because new instruments just don't feel comfortable for him.

Pic 5 - That's Giora Fiedman. I also spoke to him a little and he is very nice and one of the most interesting people and best musicians I've met. His concert was about five minutes of playing and then another five minutes of talking, and it was maybe the best lesson I've ever had. He talked about what he thinks klezmer is, and that it's not a music genre, it is a way of life, and that we all are klezmers (which in Hebrew means instrument of song). I almost cried from his speaking and playing. He also said that when you realize you are a kelzmer all mouthpieces are good, and all reeds are good (that was an example to show what is important. He was the best one there with his old instruments and no special equipment.

More pics coming soon.

Here's a note from Dennis Smylie, the great NYC Bass Clarinetist, on his take on the World Bass Clarinet Convention:

"Hi John,
I was in Rotterdam, heard these two and was very impressed by their virtuosity. Briefly one of them played on a particular design of saxophone made in Munich called a tubax. The model played, I think called the subcontrabass, is in the key of Bb and voiced a full octave below the bass sax (descending to a concert Ab below most piano keyboards). I was invited there to serve on a panel to judge a young soloists' competition of 8 folks from around the world, though none came from the US. There were 3 rounds w/very demanding music, either alone or w/piano. The winner was a man from Spain with the other 2 finalists from Japan (one of 3 woman amoung the 8) and a Czech man. All were quite impressive.
There were many concerts w/fine soloists from the world over. I played in an evening program on 2 pieces alone, by American Don Martino and Bach (an adaptation of a vlc. suite mvmnt). Also spoke to the audience about the older model Mazzeo/Buffet bass cl. and its innovative redesign in the 1940's at the Powell Flute Factory. People seemed very interested in this.
One big scale event was a performance by 148 bass cls. (inc. 3 Bb cb. cls.) of a piece in 12 voices, written and led by Englishman Paul Harvey. I sat in and did like the music as well as the remarkable sound produced.
This really was, I think, an extraordinary event with all the people present bringing their interest in and even love of the instrument. Henri Bok, the fine Dutch bass cl. soloist and teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory was the creative force behind all of this.
Take care !
Sincerly, Dennis"

Hi again, here are some more pictures.

By the way, is this at all interesting to anyone?

I saw Dennis Smylie, and that proves it that blow out is a myth :) His clarinet sounded "newer" than most, and it is from the 20s or 30s if I'm not mistaken. As he said his instrument was redesigned, but in your post he doesn't say that it goes to low written Bb!
Smylie played very good in my opinion, although I didn't like the piece he played.
The duo he mentioned that impressed him is the Schorn & Puntin duo in the picture in my above post. That shows the tubax.

First here is a photo of Dennis Smylie. This is exactly from the concert of the duo he describes (he is the one on the right).

For some reason the pics are not at the order I attach them :(
Also it's not possible to edit and add pictures, so it seems I have to make a new post to try to make the pics in the right order.

Now when I try to attach pictures I get a blank page when I click the attach button [huh]
I'm not sure what is happened since a second ago I was able to post pictures.

Keep the info coming clarnibass, you have at least 1 interested reader.
I really would have liked to go (it's not even that far from Antwerp where I live), but had to play myself and didn't have anyone to join me either.

Hope next time it's even closer :-) (Antwerp would be a nice place)

I don't thing Steve Fox went to the bass clarinet convention. He didn't mention anything about it last I spoke with him.

He did mention something about me going to Atlanta next year to play a piece on contra for him. Hmmmmmm.

Yes, Clarnibass, keep on writing about the convention. And keep trying to send pictures! (Can anyone offer suggestions here, about CB's picture posting problems?)

Did you participate in the World's Largest BC Choir? Tell us about that! And tell us about your experiences networking with other convention attendees. Did you get into some fun and rewarding BC conversations? Did you get a chance to jam or play informally with other bass clarinetists, outside of the BC Choir? Did you meet up with any other bass clarinet Internet correspondents?

Was it a good vibe, spending time with other BC enthusiasts? Were the BC players featured on the program friendly and approachable?

In other words, I hope there were many opportunities to interact with other lovers of the instrument, in addition to seeing and hearing the professionals.

So please, tell us more. Help those of us who almost went this year to think harder about going to the next one. Was there any talk about a next one?

Thanks,
Bruce

Nope. Just make the names reasonable.

Don't try - it's a waste of your time.

Here more pics.

Pic 1 - Jos Valster on bass clarinet. This trio is great, and plays beautiful music, mostly improvised I think. I'm looking for a CD by them so anyone has an idea?

Pic 2 - Lori Freedman is a Canadian bass clarinetis with great sound and amzing technique. She plays improvised music which might be hard for some people, but like most improvised music, it has its moments.

Pic 3 - The bass clarinet choir of 148 bass clarinetists. There was no place to stand far enough to capture the entire choir, since there are many people near the stage and not only on it. The piece by Paul Harvey was great, very folky piece.

Pic 4 - That's Henri Bok. I saw his masterclass and had a rehearsal with him to the Paul Harvey piece, and he is a very good musician, and a very nice and funny man. His bass clarinet has a Rossi wood bell, and a gold plated neck, which in my opinion do nothing better to the sound. There were a lot of people with wood bells (I think mostly Bok's students or former students) and after a lot of listening I don't think a wood bell is better in any way.

Pic 5 - Harry Sparnaay. He is the teacher in the Amsterdam consevatorium and he basically can do anything with the instrument. I didn't like the pieces he played that much, but you have to appreciate his amazing playing.

Belgische Clarinetist,

but never put your life at stake when translating using computers, I've seen some funny things,

and now back to the Clarinet (which we happen to write 'De Klarinet' - no need for babelfish here)

Hallo Bassclarinettiststs all over everywhere.

I played with my little trio on the festival (Jos Valster trio)
It was very early but of course we had a lot of fun we played just
before the rehearsel of the clarinet choir, I couldnot participate in the choir cause of a gig in the afternoon.

But my question is this, I just found a picture of my gig at the festival on this site so do you also have some pictures of me and my trio?

I am going to do some recordings with this trio begin december or begin Januari if anyone is intersted let me know.

It is a strange combination bassclarinet sitar and waterdrums

You can hear some more music in very different styles from me on
www.josvalster.nl

have a nice day

Jos
