 Andrew Marriner's set-up
Author: Liquorice

Does anybody know what Andrew Marriner's current set-up is? I just heard a live broadcast of his Strauss Duet-Concertino, and adore his sound. I'm sure if I can get the same mouthpiece, instrument and ligature as him, I'll be able to produce the same sound? :-)

I know he plays Buffets, but not sure if it's an R13 or RC (possibly Prestige - I can't remember).

lol. Don't know if you'll produce the SAME sound, but for what it's worth, this was his setup in the PAST (http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=78297&t=78297) but it may have chnaged.

For the record, I think he's phenominal. It's a tossup in my eyes (ears?) as to whose sound/technique I idolize. Between him, and Paquito D'Rivera (who we know uses a rosewood Rossi)

Cheers Alexi.

I saw him on telly the other year and was trying to work out which models he used - I thought they may have been Prestige of some kind as they had the silver oval on the top joint, but so has the Festival.

They looked well used anyway, and not surprising for someone of his calibre.

Thanks for the replies. Well- I went out a bought a Festival clarinet and a B40 mouthpiece and I was able to produce exactly the same tone as Mr Marriner (eg. D#)!!!

Well I guess that proves all you nay-sayers out there wrong, doesn't it!?! Lol!

He certainly (from the few recordings I heard of him) knows how to use those festivals and that B40. Myself, well, I can't even use a kazoo correctly quite yet (but I'm getting there . . .)

Hi Liquorice

I had a lesson with him at his home about five years ago (what an inspiration too!) and I seem to remember that he had a pair of Buffet Festivals (they looked quite tatty! with a Vandoren B45 mouthpeice and a size 3 reed (blue box) - he said that many years ago he used a Crystal mouthpeice (also vandoren) but soon changed when he learnt how flexible a normal hard rubber mouthpeice is.

My opinion of him is that he is the greatest orchestral player of our generation, and any opportunity to hear him is a must.
For sheer beauty of sound have a listen to his recording of the Finzi Concerto(Phillips 454 438-2) with his Father conducting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

He's had the LH Ab/Eb key taken off as well from what I remember (unless it was never fitted on his).

The opinions I express are my own.

Aaah, so that must be it... I'll have my LH Eb/Ab key removed immediately!

HAHAHA!

I can hear you turning the house upside down looking for a screwdriver!

Well, if it's good enough for him...

He plays on Sinus reeds, his own recipe that Sinus refuse to sell to anyone else...

That must be his secret...haha

I've never heard of Sinus reeds. Are they worth trying? Where do you buy them?

I can't deal with them...but then I have no problem with Vandorens.

As with anything, try them...but if you like them be prepared to pay twice as much as most other brands as they sell in much smaller numbers.

www.reedsdirect.co.uk is my source here in the UK.
