I have two mouthpiece blanks both marked (on the RH shoulder of the table) "G8." On the other (LH) shoulder "FRANCE" appears. They are made from different blanks altogether. I also have two SML mouthpieces with no "G8" marking - these are from the same style blank; however, I have just seen an SML mouthpiece on line (eBay), identical to my SML's, that has also the "G8" marking.
Can anyone enlighten me on the history of the "G8" marking? (I didn't think so ... ![[frown]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie2.gif) LOL.)
Of the four mouthpieces I have (noted above), one of the "G8"'s is a superlative player - absolutely outstanding - very much like my Cicero Kaspar. I have attached a couple of photos of this G8.

I played on a G8 as a teenager briefly, until I changed teachers and got put on a Vandoren. Still in the cigar box of old mouthpieces. This is what it says:
Steel Ebonite
Reg. U.S. Pat. Office
G8
The Woodwind Co.
New York
They may have been produced at different times from different blank styles, e.g., mine has only one line to place the bottom edge of the ligature.
Yours is in better condition.

The blank in the picture looks like Chedeville but it's not Chedeville. This one is made from 'Steelite Ebonite' blank by Riffault. "G8" is a facing.
"G8" on the Woodwind Co mouthpieces is a model name and has nothing to do with your mpc. I just reasently sold SML mouthpiece with a 'G8' facing. It was made from a different, kinda lousy blank.

Thanks, but I'm still confused. I'm seeing the designation "G8" on mouthpieces labeled Woodwind, SML, and - as mine have - no maker's label at all.
What is the commonality? Who made them (all?) - Riffault? The blanks seem all VERY different.

I believe that the "G8" facing was originated by The Woodwind Co. in NYC, in the 1940-50s, I contacted-visited them [during a business-meeting] in about '55, to have some mps refaced, an O'Brien glass among the several [asking for "medium" facings]. I have since seen their-many mp-line advertised in brochures, and would conclude that it is one of their most "popular" facings, being "medium" as to tip, lay-length and perhaps chamber dimensions. Similarly VanDoren's 5RVL, B45 et al, and Selmers HS* and C* et al are likely their best sellers. I have asked independent refacers to apply some of these facings to other's mps and "blanks", so, as the MouthpieceWork@Yahoogroup postings show, these dimensions are common knowledge to many workers. As frequently ?accomplished? "Engage Brain Before Opening Mouth" ! The WW Co., per their LeBlanc [owners] web-site began in 1918, and from the web search, "WW Co, MP Advertisment" you can view their great variety of facings. I have still my alto sax "Melliphone Special" which I played for years, and several Steel Ebonites for Bb cl with B and G facings. Read and learn. Don

Woodwind Co. has offered G8 mouthpieces since 1918. These mouthpieces belong to the 'Original Series' line and feature long facing with two different tip openings - 1.10mm and 1.14mm.
Bill, I do not know who made them (all) without seeing them, but the one in your picture WAS MADE by RIFFFAULT
