Hello. Remember me? I asked once about info. on the composer of clarinet studies - Ludwig Wiedemann. Well, I followed most of your suggestions, and I still cannot find any background info on him. I sent an E-Mail to Faber publishing - the publisher of the study book, and they got back to me in the end, only to say that they had no info either. There is just over a week left 'till my Grade 8 clarinet exam. If the examiner asks me a question on Ludwig Wiedemann, What am I supposed to say? I am getting extremely desperate at this point and would appreciate any info or advice anyone can give me. Even a little simpathy note!?

What do you tell hem/hre? The truth! Keep a copy of the letter, and explain that you've researched the name. That's all you <i>can</i> do.
There's plenty of authors and composers who have left behind 1 or 2 significant items, and no one knows who they really were.

I would go to the teacher and bring them up to date on what you have done. Tell them that you are hitting a brick wall and would love to have any suggestions he/she could offer.

In Lawson, [Colin] [only ref. in several books], "The Cambridge Companion to the CLARINET" pg 220 under "Recommended studies" [A select list compiled by Paul Harris, which is intended to guide clarinet teachers toward publications of particular interest and value] in the Appendices is [complete] "Weidemann,L, 75 Etuden fur Klarinette [Kalmus]". The title is obviously in German, Etuden=Etudes, an oomlat [double dot] over the U in fur. Paul Harris is not further mentioned in this British paperback book, reprinted in 1997. That is an excellent suggestion. As an English teacher, I once gave a student an A for an extremely well-written essay detailing an intelligent, methodical search for information that she never could find. This college freshman had chosen a difficult topic that would have challenged a graduate student. When I let her take on this assignment, I assumed that she owned or had access to some fine private trove of information, but it turned out that she had expected to find what she needed in the U. C. Davis library. In other words, she had attempted the impossible, but she had made a noble effort -- and she wrote about it with great lucidity. That's completely legitimate scholarship, in my opinion. (It's certainly better than faking the research.) Another instructor might have graded her differently. See whether your teacher will let you write about the steps you took to do the research, even though it proved fruitless. Believe me, your teacher has gone on this type of quest and knows that there's not always a shining Grail at the end of it!

Are you in college? If so, have you gone to the reference librarian at music library? They have lots of resources at their fingertips, including, for example, abstracts of masters and doctoral degree dissertations and specialized journals. Even if this draws a blank, it's another sign of good effort, and this service is part of what your tuition is paying for.
If you're in high school, you can ask your school librarian for a reference to a college music librarian to make the same search.

If it helps, Pamela Weston's rather exhaustive study of Clarinet Virtuosi of the Past has one passing reference to Wiedemann. It says that Miguel Yuste, the Spanish clarinetist and composer, borrowed from Wiedemann and others for material in his course at the Madrid conservatory..

What board are you? I've only taken Grade 6 but I've never heard of examiners asking questions on composers. I'm Associated Board. If you have genuinly tried to research (print out your posts as proof?) I don't see how they can hit you for it.

Thanks everyone. This is more information than I have got in the past 2 months! To clear up a few things, I'm in 'sixth form' at a school in England, not that that means much to most of you. I have asked the librarian, and my teacher but neither of them could give me this much info. To answer Chloe's question, I do Guildhall now, not Associated Board. I did grades 1-6 with them but when I changed teacher, I changed boards. With this board, we get asked questions on the pieces in the exam, and knowing the composer's background helps immensely. I don't think it's neccesary to write an essay on how I didn't do the work, but it was a nice thought. I might use it on future pieces of work!
