Are the dampit humidifiers any better than a film canister with holes poked in the top and a damp sponge in it? Just curious as to what everyone thinks.

I tried both. I prefer the Dampit, but the canister's okay too. But Dampits aren't all that expensive, it's worth the extra bucks. Dampits have the advantage of a more controlled release and no chance of dripping.

When my bell ring seems a bit loose [winter-time usually], I use one of the small, adjustable tubes filled with water, or a rolled up piece of paper toweling, moistened with water, placed in the bell, works well, no bell cracks [yet]! Don

As much as I like the concept of dampits, you have to be careful. You can put one in your case if you have room but I would not put one in the instrument. They do leak - at the bottom - be sure they are very dry there. I use two in my cello tone holes in the winter but again being careful that they are dry at the bottom and top under the rubber ring. I'm not sure they really provide that much humidity but they are better than nothing. The best thing you can do for your woodwind instrument (or any instrument) is to keep it in a well sealed case when it is not being played.

The best, and I do mean the best are the Humistats that Woodwind Brasswind and Muncy sell.

$5 and they hold about 2 oz of water. A lot more then the dampit, and they last up to 5 days on a single charge.
