Brahms Intermezzi and Short Pieces that Amaze You

The shorter Brahms pieces for solo piano; Op. 116-119 are truly amazing in their emotional depth. Are there any shorter pieces for solo clarinet that amaze you?

I find "Arabesque" by Germaine Taillefere, a work of less than three minutes, to be hauntingly beautiful. It really needs a delicate sound and a great control of tonal clarity.

Baermann ("Wagner") Adagio - it says it all.

I had the opportunity to butcher this one a while ago, but hearing it played correctly wows me every time.

Suite Pour Violon, Clarinette Et Piano op.157-B • Overture

PS - Actually, the entire four piece set consists of relatively short pieces. And they're all pretty fun to listen to.

The slow movement (Lento quasi andante) from the Horovitz Sonatina.
For me this is THE slow movement. There is so much in this short but stunning piece. Getting the notes technically is not difficult. The emotions that it generate are sometimes overwhelming (like solo in Rach 2 Symphony Andante) and hard to play through. The control needed to play this smoothly, sometimes starting notes without tonguing, the dynamic changes and keeping the embouchure steady for perfect intonation in register changes, is a huge challenge.

Again like Mozart, it's not technically difficult to "play" the notes, but to "perform" is a different ball game. Having a pianist who can read your every whim in this 4mins delight, is just critical.

If you have not heard/played this piece, it's certainly one suggestion for your library. It's a fantastic little concert piece or one to leave an audience in mesmerised silence as an encore, ending on a held low E dying away.

3rd movement of Muczynski's Time Pieces actually. In the 4/4, the subdivision is actually 3+3+2, and then the 6/8 goes between 3/4 and 6/8 feels. Yet it all flows so musically! It would work great as a standalone piece except the last 4 bars don't make sense, so I usually perform it along with the 2nd movement.

Another great (but not short!) is the Dvorak Wind Serenades. No.3 would work great as a standalone work too.

I like the Romance by Reger. Also, you might be interested to know that one of the Brahms Intermezzi in AM is available in a transcription for clarinet and piano. I've only heard the piano version, so I don't know how the clarinet/piano one sounds, but if you like the piece, you might look into it.

The Mozart Concerto slow movement.
Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits (not too slow).
Pie Jesu from the Faure Requiem.
