From the Oboe board, Wayne Rapier died yesterday from an aggresive form of liver cancer. He was the associate principal in the Boston Symphony, principal in the Pops, and a superb player.
He also was the founder of Boston Records, which has released an invaluable series of woodwind records. I'm sure most clarinetists have the six Harold Wright CDs, but ther are many other treasures on the site, http://www.bostonrecords.com/. There's not a dud in the catalog, and the oboe recordings aer particularly fine. They also erissued five CDs of the amazing Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet recordings from the 1950s and 1960s.

A terrible loss. He was great to speak with on the phone. Once he sent me a cd that was not part of my order, which was missing one item that I did order. When I called him , he told me to keep the extra cd gratis, and promptly sent the correct one......and he also regalled me with great anecdotes of his days in Philly.
He provided a great service by keeping alive the recordings of the great players and made recordings available of extant players.

I'm not sure I ever knew his name, but I surely did enjoy his POPS playing, made me want to "fight the ill wind" again. Will look for CDs, TKS Ken. Don

This has been a bad week for Oboe players.
I will miss our dear colleagues Wayne Rapier AND Jerome Roth.

Wayne was at the MD ClarFest 2004 - really nice guy!

He was not that old either (I'd say mid/late 60's)

Wayne Rapier has a super tone and a great personality...when studying in Boston I met him after one of the Pops concerts...he was a true gentleman and fine artist...things have really turned for the worse on the American oboe scene.
