I have a fifteen year-old clarinet I brought home from my school. But I usually don't play on that particular clarinet since I have my own, so it's been cleaned and put away in a good storage spot about two weeks ago. Recently, I opened the case up to find my reeds to be in the worst shape... it seems like something is eating the reeds...they are jagged and have many holes in them, as if something is eating the reeds. I am so confused by this and took it in for my microbiology teacher to run a swab on the reeds. My teacher is convinced it has something to do with the case being so old since the clarinet is fifteen years-old, or possibly mouth acid, but I'm pretty sure it's not that. Does anyone have any idea what this is? Thank you =)

Worms! I've had ancient unopened boxes of Vandorens that exhibited the same damage after years in a drawer.

Dude, something IS eating the reeds.
From time to time bugs can and do get into the case and will eat whatever they can from reeds to your pads.
Check all of your pads, they probably have some holes in them.

Replacing the case is a good start to break the cycle...

Morrie says to spray the case with lysol - that will kill anything in it. (bugs included)

Yeah.........that's an inviting aroma.
Sorry, not for me.
Cases do not last forever. Don't fall in love with them.
They are disposable and easily replaced.
Student grade single cases can be bought for the price of a couple of boxes of reeds...GBK

The smell goes away after it dries....... Otherwise my whole house would always smell of lysol (I use the fresh linen versions of it only).
But $35 for a gator case is cheap and gbk is right about that one.

If you check Ebay (or maybe even your local music shop), you'll sometimes find a case (maybe SLIGHTLY used) VERY cheap. I bought mine for less than a pack of reeds. And that was including shipping.
