Re-learning Clarinet

Hello all......just wondering if anyone can give some tips here.....

I played the clarinet about 25 years ago and now my son has chosen clarinet for band....so I bought him a used Selmer, of which the sound is OK considering.....my old Crown is in the shop being re-corked.....(I like the sound on mine better, of course).

So anyhoo, was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on lessons.....the boy wants me to take lessons WITH him, is this a good idea? I' m sure its all still in my brain matter somewhere so its a matter of remembering it all....but the boy seems to have the "gift"....I don't want to hold him back either.

Would half hour lessons be better than full hour?

And lastly, whats the best way to find a teacher? We live in Palm Beach County and I've only found one teacher on the teacher database....eeek!

(OK so I worry too much I'm sure)

Nancy,

Taking lessons together with your son is a great idea--I think the sum is greater than the total of the parts. I've taught a father/son combo a few years ago (although both were advanced players) and the experience was valuable to all concerned--teacher too! I don't believe in half-hour lessons myself, but I do teach 40 minute lessons at 2/3 the hour rate, which works out well for some less advanced students.

The only teacher I know in Palm Beach county is Paul Green; he is a superb clarinetist and instructor. He is on the faculty at Florida Atlantic and at Lynn University. He might be a bit too high-powered for your present level of clarinet needs. but I'm sure he can give you a referral to someone who will meet your needs. You also could contact Phil Shapiro (a sponsor of this board) at Davie Cane; he would also be able to steer you in the right direction.
