What do you think of Eaton Clarinets'
Author: rogerb40uk

Clarinets made by Peter Eaton in UK seem to be highly regarded there and in Europe.

I know at least one BBoard member uses them. What are the opinions of those who know them, please?

Thanks.

Best regards
Roger

I've been playing them for about 3 years. They're great horns and Peter is great to work with. They were recommended to me by Jim Kanter who gets a WONDERFUL sound out of them (in fact, most of the really nice clarinet playing heard in motion picture soundtracks is probably Jim).

Hands up who thinks they're better made than B&H 1010s.

Hands up who thinks they're not all that much better made than B&H 1010s.

While we've had a lot of questions asked about Eaton clarinets, I don't think we've started to cover the water.

He makes a wide range of instruments in a wide range of materials and prices. If you've sampled an Eaton exotic, please share your impressions.

Thank you

I play an Eaton International Bb clarinet and I think it is excellent. What drew me to it at first is the sound - I played just a few notes when I knew I wanted to buy it!

I bought one earlier this year, but I'm battling with the low register. The tone is quite unfocussed in softer dynamics, and some of the notes are very sharp- so you have to lip down a lot, which makes the tone even less focussed! The tone and tuning in the clarion register is fantastic though. What mouthpieces do other poeple use with their Eaton Internationals? I'm using a Vandoren B40. I tried using one of Peter Eaton's mouthpieces but wasn't too happy with it.

As far as I know he only makes two models- the International and the Elite, and only in grenadilla. What 'exotics' are you reffering to?

I use the Eaton mouthpiece that came with the clarinet and it is my best mouthpiece and the best mouthpiece I've played.

OOPPS,

I'm sorry, I'm confusing Eaton with Hanson, who makes clarinets in rosewood and titanium!

Has anyone seen or tried a titanium bodied Hanson clarinet yet?

And do hanson actually make and finish ALL their clarinets in the UK?

I saw no sign of one when I recently visited them.

I believe they do; I certainly saw most of their range in various states of completion, but no T7s which are, I think, made to order.

As I said previously, I have found them very responsive to email enquiries, so I suggest you ask Alistair Hanson himself!

Best regards

I've never ate a clarinet, but there's probably better things to do to a clarinet than that.

Update:
After reading clarnibass's post I decided to give the Peter Eaton mouthpiece another try. I realised that it works much better with softer reeds than the ones I was using. I have been very pleased with the results, and most of the problems I had in the lower register are solved.

Several years ago I checked Eaton's URL and found:

1.They have smaller bore and big bore models.
2.Big bore model will need his special mouthpiece.
3.Big bore model seemed to emit English tone with straighter bore. This was very interesting to me.

All of these questions need actual playing, and there were no place then to try them in Japan. I gave up.

I've had my Eatons for about 4 years now and I wouldn't play anything else. I was a '1010' player while at College which I had from when I was fairly young from a pro in London so moving onto Peter's Elite clts was no problem. They are great instruments, as hand made ones should be, every recital, concerto or orchestral date I do I get so many comment on how great the instruments sound. I do know people that haven't got on with them so I think I must have been lucky that day. I can honestly say they are mt favourate clt alongside my selmer basset clt.

clarnibass- my Eaton moupiece is 1.23 21 A

Actually since I last posted I've had other hassles with this set-up. With the Eaton mouthpiece the instrument plays a bit low (my orchestra tunes at A-442). I'm thinking of going back to Buffet...
