 What are you looking for?
Author: graham

Thank you all for helping me with the first part of my school project. Being that many companies have not answered my questions I have decided to ask another question to aid me in my report.

This if for every one, 5-500, saprano to contra bass.

What are you looking for in a clarinet? What do you think the ultimate clarinet will be? Please be specific including body style, bore, key mechanisms, materials, case, reeds etc.

Thanks,
Graham

Please let me know if I can quote you. I think that if the musician buys the instrument than the musician makes the final dicision on the instrument.

I fI can Quote you please tell me your real name and with what group you play in.

Graham, I'll look up my earlier posts and try to respond to your request. I usually characterize them as "books with Clarinet in the titles" [by the many authors whose names I mentioned] which may be found in libraries, even some small ones, or may be purchased in low-cost paper-back form from on-line booksellers as listed here on Sneezy. I have obtained some 8-10 of these and request inter-library loan of the hard-to-gets, and use our library's reference set of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians frequently. If I can add to the above, will do. Good reading!!, Don

Graham:

You could also see if your local university music library has these resources, and/or the back issues of the ICA publication, The Clarinet.

Thank you, Meri, excellent idea. ICA, please pardon me for leaving out mention of, maybe, the best source of clarinet info. Don

This question is just a personal oppinion. I figure there is no right or wrong answer. In the end the consummer always decides wether or not to buy the product so I guess that we the musicians will determine the future of the clarinet.

Not in my case. I like to have a bit of backing to my opinion, and in this particular case I really don't have much to say. Besides intonation problems being solved.

IMHOpinion [as of right now], I would like to see on the market, at prices affordable to "advancing students" in high, maybe mid-high school, a very well-in-tune and pro-character-keyed plastic or Greenline-type, clarinet, equipped with a good, tested, mouthpiece. Use should be made of some of the many key-system improvements [patents to me] to solve current weak note problems, "pinch" Bb, C#/G#,and fork-fingerings such as B nat./F#. Attention should be given to easing fingering difficulties "across the break". Jack Brymer in "Clarinet" Chap. 2, goes into great detail re: the "Double" and "Reform" Boehms and the German Oehler. His thoughts on the future developments are well worth serious study and go beyond mine above. It will be interesting to read what others think!! Don
