I have recently been using a Portnoy #3 mpc (nominal facing around .048 although it feels slightly more open) on Bb soprano clarinet (a Centered Tone). I have been using Vandoren blue box reeds all my life and have been using them on the Portnoy. It has become apparent to me that these reeds are not a good fit for this mpc as the mpc facing is on the short side of medium. Any suggestions about reeds that are more suited for short facing mpc's. I might add that I am primarily a doubler who plays jazz most of the time. Thanks in advance

Hi Mike H - I still have the "best" of 3 C T's as a tie for my best jazz cl with a LeBlanc Dyn 2. I've done a bit of experimenting with these "big" 15.0 mm bore horns and BELIEVE? I've found that matching barrel dia. to the upper joint and then mp dia. to the barrel plays the best. Many barrels, even Selmer-Paris are undersized [by my little finger "feel" or measurement] and I'm a believer in bore-matching. I cant help much re: reeds, other than to suggest LaVoz med, med-hard, hard, depending on what registers you play in, as I prefer med-long to long lays with med to open tips. Luck, Don

I sugest the Pete Foutain Reeds by Marca, or the Brancher Jazz select. They dont have as much heart witch may be benificial to a short faced mouthpiece.
If you are primarly a jazzer, i recomend trying a different mouthpiece such as the Vandoren 5JB. It is a very wide tip opening that allowes for easer bends and gissandos. It also allows for a much wider tone that isn't as focused, giving a more Artie Shaw sound.

The "Pete Fountain" reeds by Marca are awful. Their useful life (even after break-in) is about an hour.
The quality of the cane borders on tissue paper and the finish looks like it was cut and shaped with dull knife blades. The reed is strictly a "throw away type" - no better than basic Rico reeds.
Many higher quality reeds are available. Don't waste your time with these.
I won't even let my beginners use them. I'm sure Pete got a nice piece of pocket change to lend his name to these.

What???? Artie Shaw could hold his own (and certainly project) over all groups he fronted.
We should all sound so "unfocused" ...GBK
