Hello all:
I have a question so I hope I came to an educated group! <grin> Anyway, I have an old wooden clarinet I want to sell and I'm not quite sure what it's worth. I have not been able to dig up any information on it's brand name. Lyceum.
If anybody can tell me more about it let me know. If it's a good brand name, what other brand it's comparable to in price, etc. Thanks so much, I look forward to any responses!

I doubt that "Lyceum" is going to help, since the dictionary defines it as a large, public building [concert hall?], and/or where Aristotle taught in Greece! Are there other markings on it? If not, its likely a "stencil" clar with the maker and marketer unknown, prob. a low-cost horn. Sorry, Don

Don is right. I've seen a couple of thesed in the past although I can't remember the exact spelling on the logo. They are a stencil horn probably very similar to others that were imported in the same era. Value?---probably more sentimental to the owner than anything. Market price won't be very high.

I too, have a wooden clarinet marked as "Lyceum" of which I am trying to research the history. I bought it as my first horn in 1973 from a woman who bought it used at least 20 years earlier which makes it at least 50 years old. It is marked with a serial number "5772" on both bore sections, "Made in France" on the bell, and "Made in Italy" on the upper bore. The word "Lyceum" is engraved in script on the barrel, upper bore, and bell. The mouthpiece that came when I bought it was a Selmer HS* and was probably not original. I realize it may not be a particularly valuable horn, but any information about these instruments would be appreciated.
