Now that I know where to shop for an instrument (thanks to all of you who opined essentially unanimously in favor of Weiner..), it might be a good idea to locate a teacher in NYC.
Who do you think would be a good choice for a middle-age guy who used to be quite proficient, but has not played in a very long time?

Mark has some names up there that I recognize (and I've heard him play once or twice and if he recommends someone, I bet you can't go wrong with one of his recommendations). Also not to be forgotten, are the various music colleges in NY. Mannes, Manhatten school of music, Julliard, etc. etc. You can probably visit those colleges, and express to the departments there that you are looking for a teacher. While their faculty may be too busy to take you as a student, I've found that clarinetists (those that I've dealt with at least) are usually a very polite and approachable group, and they may have some recommendations of either past students of theirs, or perhaps friends/aquaintences that may be able to help you out.
And why not try a couple of the students at those colleges themselves? I'm willing to bet that someone going to one of those places for a graduate's degree would be able to help you out (saying that you haven't played in a while), and may not be as expensive as a well-known, well-established professional.

Another good teacher that I am in contact with, but have not yet had a lesson with is Karl Herman. One person to talk to about him on this board is Chris Hill who studied with him for two years and could give you good insights into his teaching style.
