Hello!!

I was wondering if anyone here has ever played in Hello Dolly?? If so, could you describe what the music was like?? Specifically if I should play clarinet or opt for trombone (am looking for the more exciting part!!)

Thanks!!

Clayton

Hello Dolly! is a great classic Broadway show.
There are usually 4 reed books, they all have clarinet parts to play. I enjoyed playing Reed 2, but I do not know how the Trombone players felt about their books? There are 2 Bone books, and 4 Reed books to choose from...good luck!

Full Orchestration for HELLO DOLLY!:

2 Violin I
1 Violin II
1 Viola
1 Cello
1 Bass & optional Tuba

1 Reed I: Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet & Alto Saxophone
1 Reed II: Clarinet & Alto Saxophone
1 Reed III: Clarinet & Tenor Saxophone
1 Reed IV: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet & Baritone Saxophone

1 Trumpets I and II
1 Trumpet III
1 Trombone I
1 Trombone II

1 Percussion I and II:

Timpani (2 Drums) Glockenspiel
Bass Drum Bell Plate
Snare Drum Wood Block
Cymbals, Suspended Cow Bell
& Hand Slide Whistle
Vibraphone Ratchet
Xylophone

1 Guitar & Banjo

1 Piano-Celeste

Orchestra parts are cued so the score may be played with the following minimum number of parts: 3 Reeds, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone, 1 Percussion, Bass and Piano. Add parts in the following order to build the full orchestra: Reed IV, Trombone II, Trumpet III, Cello, Violins, Viola, Percussion II and Guitar-Banjo.

Perphaps you could contact Carrie (Clarinetgirl06). I seem to remember that her school did seussical the musical some time ago, she may be able to help you out. Good Luck!!

Mr. Moses

Thank you soo much. I've heard from another forum that both the clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun, so I guess I'll let the director decide. Thanks!!

My daughter's high school did Seussical last year (she played Mayzie). There are three reed books in the standard orchestration:

Reed 1 Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo
Reed 2 Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Oboe, Tenor Saxphone
Reed 3 Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute

You can find the full orchestration, along with 30 second sound clips from some of the songs here:

My daughter's school's policy is to split the books to allow maximum participation in the pit. I didn't watch the pit closely but it seemed to me that, consistent with the variety of instruments each reed player is supposed to cover, the three clarinetists and bass clarinetist saw only limited playing time. My impression might not be correct, however.

Best regards,
jnk

Thanks so much! We're splitting up the books too, but theres a chance that i mite be transposing oboe as well, so thats a little more playing time for me!
Thankyou!
Fiona
