Does anybody know how many/which clarinets are used in the operas 'Peter Grimes' and 'The Makropoulos Case'?
Is there a website where one can look these things up?

Liquorice - not often I can help you, but as it happens I have a score of Grimes. It lists:
In the orchestra:
2 clarinets in Bb and A (2nd doubling Eb clarinet)
In the dance band:
2 clarinets in Bb.
But the intention is for the dance band to be staffed from the orchestra, not to require additional players.
For those who don't know it (Liquorice, I'm sure you do) Grimes is a very great masterpiece.
The story goes that, during the Second World War, English opera singers were sent in small groups to entertain the populus. There were no big productions. The war over, they were all looking forward to a grand gala reopening - maybe Aida or something equally loud and crowd-pleasing. They were not best pleased to find that their first post-war production was to be a new opera by a relatively unknown 32-year-old. During rehearsals, there was much discontent.
The first performance came. At the end, silence ..... silence .... silence .... then tumultous applause.
The audience recognised the greatness of what they had heard, even if the musicians did not.
-----------
If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.
