Does Music123 have an actual store?
Author: sfalexi

I know woodwind/brasswind apparantly has a huge store with lots of inventory to try out in IL. However I just realized that music123.com is based out of NJ. In Cherry Hill. Do they have an actual inventory and has anyone been there? Or is that just a "corporate headquarter" type place?

Music123 is the Internet arm of The Woodwind and the Brasswind (as has been mentioned here before). They are essentially one and the same business.

I do believe the store you're referencing is in SouthBend, Indiana and Mark's right.

Yes Woodwind & Brasswin is in Southbend, Indiana, not IL. Muisc123 has their "corporate headquarter" as you called it in NJ. For taxes purposes they are in NJ (so if you order from Music123 to NJ you will need to pay state tax, eventhough the products will be shipped from Indiana).
Muisc123's warehouse is the same as the WW&BW one, in Southbend. They are pretty much "the Internet arm of The Woodwind and the Brasswind" but not exactly, since WW&BW themselves has their own online store. Also, some products are available on WW&BW's website but not available from Music123.

Music123 has an "about us" section that traces origins to Zapf's music store in Philly. They were located in the Olney section, on 5th St...a neighborhood known for its Germanic influence in the mid 20th century.
They sold everything musical....mouthpieces, sheet music, guitars, horns, you name it-they had it. They also did repairs, rentals, etc.
There was a nice candy store up the street (a trolley stop away) and Max's tobacconist, and a few boutiques. A fun place to visit.

WWBW looks like they are run by Bamber.
Obviously the businesses linked up somewhere along the line.

(at least as of a year ago):
One difference in the websites is that WWBW stores your account info, while M123 makes you reenter your cc #. Calling M123 on phone for "expert" once got me a person in Cherry Hill, NJ.
emailing WWBW for "expert" put me in touch with Scott Kurzweil at WWBW.
This was correct as of a year or two ago....maybe management has become a syncytium since then.

Woodwind Brasswind was going to partnership with Music123 which was what Zapfs used to be. The Zapfs retail stores closed 5 years ago or so.

Dennis Bamber, owner of WWBW gave it a day and then bought them out.

So now Music123 is completely WWBW.

WWBW had 10 years ago an inventory of $12 Million.

Now it has an inventory of $120 Million

Hi,

I looked up an old thread about music stores of the past and thought newer people might want to view this discussion.

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=122570&t=122489

I had a wonderful visit at WWBW a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed a long and very interesting chat with Scott Kurtzweil the Woodwind Product Manager and Purchasing Agent for Music123 and WWBW. We were intially in adjacent practice rooms and then happened to met in the hallway with "man, I really liked your blah, blah, blah..." He was selecting a clarinet for a customer and I was trying tenor MPs.

Scott mentioned some very interesting woodwind things that WWBW has planned for the near future. Nice guy, great company (I have no association with either WWBW or Music 123).

Alseg and David Blumberg, Music123 may trace its origins to Zapf's but I do believe that they are separate companies; at least as of three years ago there was a Zapf's store in Cherry Hill (and it's still listed on AnyWho) and that was at a different location than the Music123 store. Yes, there actually was a bricks and mortar Music123 store, but I believe it had a close-out sale and then went totally internet. The Zapf's Cherry Hill location was created by the combination and closing of their Olney, Plymouth Meeting and Pennsauken stores.

I suppose there was some kind of complex business deal between these two companies? I enjoyed shopping in the Zapf's in Cherry Hill, got great personal attention from Harley, the woodwind guy who knew his business. Also went to the Olney store once and the Pennsauken store a few times.

I really miss the plymouth meeting store as they had quality stuff. The store which replaced them is music and arts which to me is a shlock store selling the 2x2 mini imitation chamois clarinet swabs which do nothing........

But lots of guitars!

RodRubber....I replied to you via email.

Many small local shops have evolved (by intelligent design?) into suppliers for the garage band/electronic industry. They seem to concentrate their woodwind and brass sections into modules for the band rental market. This created a small boutique niche for the concentrated upper end specialists (Marinelli, etc..or see the tuba* and horn or flute sites for other specialty shops). Rehashed previously on this and other boards.
