Hi guys. I am currently playing on an RC Prestige Bb clarinet. I use a rosewood Fobes barrel, but my teacher agrees with me that the sound with this barrels is a little bit small. When I use the Prestige barrel that came with the clarinet, we both agreed the sound isn't as refined, but it is bigger. I also have a Buffet DG barrel that I used to use on an A clarinet (it is 65mm). When I put it on my Bb, my teacher said there is no comparison, the sound is so much better...but it was too short. I need 66mm. I know Buffet stopped making the DG, but is it posible there are more DG barrels around the place available for seperate sale?

Nick,
Why can't you just keep that DG barrel pulled out one mm? or put a spacer in there of some sort?
Just seems to me that if you both agree that that DG barrel helps you sound better, why not continue using THAT DG barrel?

because even with a 66mm barrel I still need to pull out quite a bit to tune to 440. I live in a warm climate and players here generally play sharp.

The spacers will help. Try that first. It'll also be a heck of a lot cheaper!

try this- get an old hard rubber mouthpiece and cut a 2mm slice off the end of the mouthpiece tennon..... use this as a "tuning ring" but at the mouthpiece end of the DG barrel. Sometime the ring will be a bit small in external diameter (so will go slightly out of "centre")... in this case paint the outside of the ring with nail polish until it fits.
play for a few sessions this way, paying careful attention to the tuning. Probably the throat B flat will be too flat- so what you can do is sand the tuning ring thinner, testing as you thin the ring until you find the best thickness (lay a sheet of flat sandpaper on glass.... you get the idea, right?)
you'll probably end up with a 65mm barrel with a 1mm tuning ring at the mouthpiece socket. Very cheap and effective.
