Hi, I have a wood Selmer clarinet marked "Centered Tone" and "Selmer Depose France". there's also a serial number, "P8928". For me, it seems to play well...is it a good overall clarinet?

Hello,
Please pardon me for being sarcastic...

You've answered your question before you asked it!

Hi Chris - You are among a nunber of us "fortunates" having a Sel CT cl, mine is a [17/6] P8xxx ser #, of 1954 vintage, the first CTs were prob made in the early '50s. The Depose refers to patent, issued or applied for, will have to look for "it/them". It is a large, 15.0mm, cylindrical bore, and may have been Sel's answer to classical and jazz cls by Buffet and Leblanc, back then, and highly regarded as an all-around cl. Other owners, please chime in. If needed, have a VG tech work on it, I'm sure most like to work/play on these goodies. Congrats, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I don't think I even need to reitterate what I think and know about these fantastic clarinets, they've served me well and I hope to pass them onto someone that can get as much joy from playing them as I have.

christian_comeau,
I have met top notch jazz professionals who won't play anything else.

I have a Selmer CT "Q" series made in 1958. I love this clarinet-responsive with a very a large, rich, bright sound. I especially like the "ring" in the sound. I used to use a Vandoren 5JB with it and playing in a big band I had no trouble being heard. I now use a Portnoy #3 or a Selmer CP 100 122 (both .048) with it with good results. Just a great instrument . To the originator of this thread, take care of it because my guess is that the chances of ever seeing a clarinet like this again are slim.

I've only ever seen N, P and Q models from other players here in the UK - I've got an N8xxx 17/6 in original, unplated condition and my pair which I've had since I was 15 and have rebuilt are N69xx and P10xx - all these have the BT style keywork, the later P series onwards had slightly beefier keywork (in places) similar to the early Series 9s.
I was fortunate that the pair I bought were found in an attic where they'd been languishing for about 20 years, so I got them for a bargain price - not only that, they were both 19/7 system! And I took advantage of all the extra gadgets from the moment I started using them, and have never looked back.
That's why I'm always on the hunt for full Boehms, and wide bore clarinets. And I'd ideally want a pair of P or Q series full Boehms, that's if I could evr find them. Or an Eb from that era with extra keywork - forked Eb/Bb and a LH Ab/Eb would be nice.

The opinions I express are my own.

My teacher (an RC Prestige player) always marvelled at how easily the altissimo register is on CTs, so much so he even said 'I envy you at how easily you can get those notes'.

About Benny Goodman and Selmer clarinets, I friend of mine here in Philadelphia since passed away(no, not Moennig) knew Benny Goodman and told me that Goodman actually favored Buffet and laughingly told me that in an ad for Selmer clarinets Goodman is pictured actually holding a Buffet clarinet. BG was some character.

I didn't know I got such a clarinet...
To answer redwine, I asked if it's a good overall clarinet because I'm not professional (I'm 16 yo) so FOR ME, it sounds great, but I wanted to know if I could do a long way with it...

I've owned my N and P series set of CTs since I was 15 - [ snipped - GBK ] and I know of a couple of players that still play on the same CTs they've had from new, back in 1954 and 1956, and still going strong.
