 Buffet clarinet - A440 and 442
Author: Aussie Nick

I was wondering how do you tell if a Buffet is at 440 or 442. The Bb clarinets they are producing these days have 440 on the bell along with the model name... but what about the A's which only seem to say R13 or RC or PRT or FES etc etc... is there a letter before the serial number if its at 442?

According to their catalogue the Toscas are pitched at 440Hz with the 66mm barrel and 442Hz with the 65mm one, the Festivals are the same as the Toscas, the Vintages are only built to 440hz as are the R13s, but the various RCs have pitches of 440, 442 and 444Hz.

But as far as other pitch identification marks on the joints I don't know anything else apart from what is stamped on the bell.

According to Mark's serial number page http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html, the European model Buffet's at 442 have an "F" at the beginning of the serial number.

However, at the Clarinet Symposium http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=178641&t=178641, Guy Chadash said that the instruments are identical, except for a shorter barrel on the "F" instruments. (However, he said other things that were not technically correct, so I would prefer to have a definitive statement from, say, Francois Kloc.)

Ken here's Mr. Kloc's answers to questions a few years ago.

the couple of times i've come across Buffet clarinets with the F prefix in the serial number (most reccently a pair of S1 clarinets brought over from South Africa) they played around A=445 with a 660 barrel, but these were old instruments that had been neglected, so maybe some bore shrinkage had occured.
from what both Francois and Mr Chadash have said, in modern times at least the instruments (high pitch/low pitch) are the same- but supplied with different length barrels.

Just checked, we all have 'F' numbered clarinets over here and with the 65mm barrel it is tuned at 442Hz.

But the mouthpiece and the player of course have some influence too.
