This year, I've been trying to build up a decent repertoire before going off to college. I'm looking for stuff to play that's been completely different from what I've played for the past three years (Mozart/von Weber/Stamitz). So far this year, I've tried the Wilson Osborne Rhapsody, and Premiere Rhapsody by Debussy. I'll be finished with the Debussy here in a few weeks, however, and I'm looking for something along the more contemporary lines to play with after that that will occupy me at least for part of the summer. Any suggestions? I'd prefer something a little more obscure if possible, as opposed to say, Three Pieces, which I should probably learn anyway, but I'm putting off.

How about the Five Pieces for clarinet solo by William O. Smith or the Time Pieces by Muczynski. There is also the Cappricio by Sutermeister(I'm not sure I've got all the spellings right!) I've played all these pieces and they are very good. The Muczynski is cl and piano but the other two are solo clarinet.
There are also sonatas and sonatinas by Milhaud, Honegger, Joseph Horowitz, Malcolm Arnold, Arnold Cooke. Tons of stuff.

What about Wings by Joan Tower, that's not heard very often. The Wilson Osborne Rhapsody is a great choice..it's funny to hear of so many people playing it now, when I played it (which wasn't long ago) not many people heard of it. Unfortunately, if you are auditioning for college, they like the standard rep. to be played..you might try building up those orchestral excerpts...those always come in handy. What about Igolf Dahl, Sonata. That's not heard alot either. (probably because it is dificult to find.)

If you really game and quite an experienced player you could try the Francaix Theme and Variations, absolute fantastic piece. ( Quite difficult though, but not often played )

One of my favorites is "Abyss of the Birds" from Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.
