Hello everyone, I am learning to play the b flat clarinet and the alto sax. I am prob about a grade3/4. I noticed that I particularly enjoy playing Jewish music from my Boosey and Hawkes book. I would like to try and play some longer pieces and some quite different pieces to the ones I've tried. Most of the stuff I see on the Internet is American and I live in England. The postage costs were too much for an American site I looked at. Can anyone recommend a British site that sells some jewish music? I also like to play the pieces in my Boosey book that say Hungarian or Bosnian folk tunes. Any suggestions for a site? Remember I am not a professional. Thankyou.

Try www.sheetmusicplus.com. I have a wonderful book from them called Play Klezmer. You can also put in a search for Jewish music. They have excellent service and a return policy.

You will not be disappointed if you purchase The Big Klezmer Fake Book compiled by Velvel Pasternak...Tara Publications. I probably got it from Sheet Music Plus. I find that playing selections from it is a pleasant break from regular practice work.

I just received an interesting music publication from SCHOTT. They have music publishing houses all over the world, including NY and London.
They've sent me a new release titled:
MAZLTOV!(sp.) by Joel Rubin.
In my brief look at the music and text about Jewish music, I believe it's really quite good and well written.
The music is mainly that of the great Jewish/Klezmer clarinetist, Dave Tarras.
There are transcriptions of his tunes, and many liner notes about style and phrasing. All in all, a good book to have.

I have no idea how music this publication will cost you, but it's well worth the investment. Check with SCHOTT, London.

"The Compleat Klezmer" by Henry Sapoznik, Tara Publications, with CD.
If available, this may be a better start, because of the introductory modal discussion, as well as the archival recordings.

Abe Galper wrote a Klezmer book.
Luyben music carries it I'm pretty sure.
Not sure if it got published by Mel Bay or not (it was when I got it published by Mharva publishing which is Avrahm's name spelled backwards.

Mharva was Abe's "self publishing" company run by Abe. I don't think he needed your help in getting it published there, Dave.

Hello to everyone who replied. I have ordered from a site but I will refer back to this page to browse some other sites. I didn't really know what I wanted to be honest. I saw on one site...Klezmer, Yiddish, Hebrew, etc....I haven't a clue what any of these words mean...with regards to music...but reading between the lines....Klezmer is what I want. I have ordered a book and cd for my sax and I am waiting for the big fake book to come in for the clarinet. Thankyou all very much, Margaret.
