 This place is great
Author: rockymountainbo

I just wanted to let you all know how much I love this board. I hope this isn't an inappropriate post.

I tried to post some things on a jazz board on Live Journal and after a few days of being ridiculed and insulted I just decided it wasn't worth my time.

Thanks for your patience to the beginners like me. It doesn't go unnoticed.

Interestingly, some folks who post on the SaxOnTheWeb forum have stated there that they don't like THIS board because they've been ridiculed or insulted or otherwise offended HERE!

Just goes to show.................

Aahh, the inner dynamics of a large group...

I know of groups that require you to sacrifice a chicken before asking a question. If you don't, you're subject to all kinds of silly remarks. ;-)

Get over it. And don't take it personally.

Personally, I think a board like this should be basically unmoderated, except for curse words and direct criticisms of specific people.

I've had my posts deleted from here and many other forums I frequent for seemingly silly reasons. That has often made me want to leave.

All in all, I love forums in general though, I have about 4 different hobbies I am involved with and I visit a forum for every one. Its a great way to enjoy the social side of a hobby, when you can't meet up with people in person that often.

bryris,

Re: "I think a board like this should be basically unmoderated".... I beg to differ: IMO it's the moderators who make this such a great place to visit, learn, and make new friends. In addition to their own contributions to threads, they keep everyone civil and keep contributions on topic.

I can think of no one who has done more for the clarinet community than these two gentlemen. As rockymountainbo said "it doesn't go unnoticed".

Regards,
Hans

With y' all the way, Rocky-Bo, it takes only a short visit to other forums to appreciate the real value of this Bulletin Board.

I totally agree with you too, Hans. Without our respectful and capable moderators to keep us from straying too far off the beam, I'm certain things would deteriorate rapidly.

I've learned a LOT from this place. Quite a valuable tool for learning. Especially if you don't have an instructor (I Know, I Know. I should really get one one of these days, but my life always seems to be too busy or I never seem to find one). But this has been a great substitute in the meantime, until I get around to getting one.

One day I'll get one though. But until then, anytime I'm looKing for reviews, advice, experiences, or just any information in general dealing with clarinets, I can pretty much banK on this place having some discussion(s) on it.

Well said, Hans et al, its been a great learning-sharing experience for me and those to whom I have recommend it, for quite a few years. As to "moderation", in its broadest sense, what little I've experienced has been well deserved and due, in that, like most folk, perhaps, I go beyond reasonableness at times, and need to be admonished, and it has been in a considerate manner. Keep it up MC/GBK, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

David sez: "Interestingly, some folks who post on the SaxOnTheWeb forum have stated there that they don't like THIS board because they've been ridiculed or insulted or otherwise offended HERE!"

As one of the Admins for SOTW I just wanna say that there are over 10,000 readers on the SOTW forum. It takes all kinds of people to make a world. Don't characterize us based on the comments of a few. Personally, I like both forums and have learned a lot about playing instruments. Keep up the good work. :o)

My point above is in light of that fact that if we were just a bunch of guys and gals in a room talking about clarinets, we would't be moderated by anybody, and we'd all get along fine. I love going to the music store and just goofing around. I play guitar as well, and love to go try them out and talk music and stuff...and it never gets uncivil.

I think moderators should be there to basically handle the very few who try to ruin it for the others. I was a moderator on a large PC website for a while, one of about 6 or so, and some of the other guys felt some sort of power trip or something....I guess they had never felt in-charge of anything before and so it got to thier heads. They needed to be throttled back a bit and have things put back into perspective for them.

The moderators on this board are fine, and frankly ever board that I have ever stayed at have been just fine. As far as staying on topic, I agree with that wholeheartedly. Many people, me included, come to these boards to get information, and if people were talking about who knows what instead of clarinets, it would surely detract from the environment.

However, the rule of thumb on any forum is:

"When in Rome......."
