Author: laenloe

Were the Mozart quartets, K496 and K374 (f) written for A clarinet or Bb?

André published K380/374f, K378/371d and K496 as Quartets for Clarinet and string trio as Op.79 (in 1799).

K496 is the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello. Both the Voxman and Klocker editions of it are for C clarinet.

The Voxman edition of K374f (Sonata for Piano and Violin) is for Bb clarinet ...GBK

i used to have the Musica Rara editions of these- now i can only find 374 and 317 (for B flat clarinet), but i don't remember the other one being for C clarinet (admitedly, i have never performed it, but did do a "read through" in about 1994.....)
somehow, i imagine GBK to be more reliable than my memory- but surely i'd remember having to play C clarinet for a whole quartet?

I don't have the music either, and am also strictly going by memory, but seem to recall C clarinet (or a C clarinet part with a possible Bb transpostion part included?)

Then again, I can't remember what I had for dinner last evening [wink] ...GBK

I have the music and it's published by Musica Rara - and it's for Bb clarinet. I just questioned the authenticity of that scoring and I think that you are correct about it being a transcription. Oh, well. I'll keep looking for something better. Thanks so much for all of your input.

YAY i was right! (though it's quite possible that the original publication of this quartet was for C clarinet)
"you are correct about it being a transcription"- all three quartets are transcriptions, and the only person who thinks they may be by Mozart is Herr Kloecker....
keep playing the good tunes

Let's get this clear. These surely are by Mozart but are adaptations for different instruments than the original. However, the one I bought (sorry cannot remember which number) sounds pretty marginal as Mozart to me. But the string players who also play this say it is entirely recognisable as another Mozart piece. My part is in B flat, but my guess would be GBK is right concerning the originals.

Anyway, I wish other publishers would follow suit concerning bass clarinet parts in A as it must have occured to them that the parts should be printed in B flat by now. But all publishers care about are royalties.

yep
they are all transcriptions of works by Mozart (as GBK pointed out)
the issue is WHO did the transcriptions, DK claims it was possibly Mozart, but ask any viola or cello players who's played them and they'll laugh at that suggestion
