 Bass Clarinet Duets
Author: Iacuras
Date:   2005-09-20 20:01

Today in my High School Wind Ensemble, we played Bach's Contrapunctus IX without our director conducting. Afterword, he said what would really improve us would be some chamber playing, such as duets trios and quintets. There are two Bass Clarinets in the Wind Ensemble, myself and one other. I was wondering if there were any good duets we could play together to work on chamber repitoure. Thanks in advance.

Just get some good clarinet duet material and play it. Most standard clarinet material will pose more challenges tha most wind ensemble bass clarinet parts.

When I was in high school a few millennia ago, my best friend (also a bass clarinetist) and I decided to play a clarinet duet work (I forget what it was) on bass clarinets for the county and state solo & ensemble festivals. The piece itself wasn't very good and our playing pretty much stunk, but the judges had never heard such a noise and were impressed that we had the nerve to do such a thing, so they gave us pretty high marks anyway. Chalk it up to "shock and awe"..............

In the Langenus "Complete Method for the Clarinet" Part 3, there are "Classical Duos" by Mozart, "From the original for two Corno di Bassetto".

Several of these sound quite good played on two bass clarinets. I have used them for teaching material for years with my bass clarinet students.
