 alternate finger for high F
Author: linda_loo

I have a student, who is preparing for an audition on Eb Clarinet (the piece is a Bb piece, a poor selection, IMO, but whatever). She just can't her "F" high enough, no matter what fingering she has tried (and am considering her to just play an F# rather flatly).

Any ideas.

The standard fingering for the written high F (F6) , 3 leger lines above the staff is notoriously flat on many Bb and Eb clarinets, especially on the R-13. Try opening the RH sliver (banana) key to raise the pitch.

Other fingering choices:

The most common and simple fingering solution is to use the long or "covered" F6:

TR x x x C#/G# / x x x

Another good fingering to try which is usually higher than the standard F6 is:

TR x x x C#/G# + 2nd RH trill key from the top / o o o Eb/Ab

You should also check the opening of your C#/G# pad to see that it is venting enough. It is often set too low.

Remember - alternate fingerings are only as good as its practicality and your ability to incorporate the fingering into the context of the passage...GBK

Francois Kloc says that the pad for the C#/G#/F hole (the key for the left little finger) is almost always too low. You should be able to play a low E, open the key and get a multiphonic. If you can't, open the key up until you do. Then do the same thing on low F, F#, G and G#.

This will almost certainly raise the pitch for the high F.

Hello,

My standard fingering for high F is: TR 123 C#/vent. While fingering that, I also open the middle of the staff A key, raising the pitch of the F.

Ben -

I've always found that the fingering you suggested, while easy to use in most applications, can be a bit low (on the R13) and needs the right pinky Eb/Ab key to slightly raise the pitch ...GBK

Hello,

The right pinky Eb/Ab is what I call a vent, so I use it too, although I have no idea how it will tune for an R13.

I use this fingering for alt. F :

Th Sp throatAb oxx C#/G# ooo Ab/Eb

And on Basset Horn (with ring keys), keeping finger 1 down (or rolled down uncovering the perforation in fingerplate 1 if fitted) and the throat Ab open otherwise it's too sharp.

I've been having some trouble with the alt. F on my Eb clarinet too, so I'll try some of the suggestions.

Top G is dead easy though - shame I didn't have this Eb (R13) a couple of years ago to do Mahler 2 (I let someone else do it instead) - my Vito isn't good in the altissimo register.
