 Need advice please

I'm planning on going to the World Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam. I assumed I could take my bass clarinet on the plane with me, but to my surprise, it is not possible unless I purchase another ticket for the bass clarinet. I'm considering it, but just it seems rediculous. Don't thery understand that an instrumnet is not like clothes or other stuff you bring. I can put it with the rest of the baggage (and I een have insurance) but for me this isn't really an option. I'm too scared something will happen to it.
Another option is not bring my bass clarinet at lal and just my Bb clarinet. I planned to get my bass repaired because I wasn't really happy with the repairmen in my country, and also try lots of mouthpieces and stuff at the convention, which I won't be able to do obviously without my bass.

What would you do?

Thanks.

Hello,

Pack it very well and put it under the plane. How do you think it got to your music store? If you pack it the correct way, nothing will happen to the instrument.

Check with a different airline before you buy your ticket (if it's not too late), as companies vary widely in rules and enforcement. I've had similar issues travelling with a bike - some airlines take it free and unwrapped in addition to your baggage allowance, some need it in a cardboard box and charge a nominal flat rate, some will only carry it in a hardshell case for an exorbitant fee. Maybe the difference in ticket price to travel with a more accommodating airline, or for a first class ticket, is worth it.

I put my A and Bb under the plane on my way to Europe. On the way back... I didn't.

If people are allowed to store a guitar case in the plane's closet (where often suits are stored), I see no reason why an airline shouldn't be able to accomodate a bass clarinet case in there. Inquire about that.
