The repertoire for the International Clarinet Association's HS Competition this year is as follows:
#1. Francis Poulenc – Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (play mvts. 2 & 3 only), published by Chester
#2. Béla Kovács - Hommage à J.S. Bach for Clarinet Solo (from the collection Hommages à), published by Edition Darok (may be played on either A or B-flat clarinet)
Has anyone here ever played either of these, and how difficult are they?

And has anyone ever entered this competition? Mostly I'm just insanely curious, especially about the music, but any opinions would be lovely.

They are moderately difficult. the Poulenc is a 5 in many states (a 6 in some, VA for eg) and the Hommage is a work that I've only heard once and I'd say it's a solid 5. Michal Beit-Halachmi has a recording of it on his website.

Anyone have any idea when info about the other competitions will be available? I just checked the website but it looks like the young artist and orchestral audition pages have only been partially updated if at all.

Does anyone know where I can find music for the Hommage piece? I have the Poulenc, but not the Kovacs. They always pick one piece that "no one" has ever heard of and that I can never find.

Luyben Music has it.
I attended the High School ICA competition 2 summers ago. The level for the top 4 players was quite high. There was 1 player whom I didn't feel had any business being in it, but the others were really good.

The Poulenc Sonata is standard repertoire, and there are many recordings available. Make sure you get the right edition if you enter as Chester published an edition with "corrections," I have the older one myself. There are several sections in the 2nd movement, and throughout the 3rd movement that are some the most challenging of the piece. In the second movement, it is often played slower than necessary, and it loses the forward motion. Listen to the piano part, it's often like a heartbeat. Make sure the difficult intervals in the altissimo are very smooth and in tune and at the correct dynamic. Also, be conscious of when the phrases are started by the piano and finished by the clarinet. If you aren't aware of this, it will sound fragmented. Also, when rehearsing with the piano, make sure you are aware of their dynamics. There are several instances when the piano part is marked 1 dynamic level louder than the clarinet, and it should be evident. In the third movement, be very conscious of evenness of tone throughout the registers and really work on getting a beautiful, full sound with crisp clear articulation in the altissimo. I hear too many people play with a pinched sound and squeaks and play with dirty articulation in these passages, besides playing all of it out of tune... Also, my favorite part of maybe the whole piece is the middle section of the 3rd movement, where the clarinet plays a beautiful soaring melody with some very exciting fast passages in the piano part. I'd really want to do something special here. Make sure you translate all the French if you don't recognize all the terms at sight. It will make your performance authentic and the judges can tell if you don't know what they mean. I don't know the Kovacs, I've heard of it, but never played it or listened to it.
