 Poulenc and Prokofiev

Hi

Just a quick question about the Poulenc sontata. I am pretty bad at dates and all the history, but am I right to say Poulenc wrote the sonata in Bb major after Prokofiev wrote the Hebew Themes?
In the Poulenc sonata in the movement called Allegro con fuoco (I have the recording of just this movement so I don't know which one it is) there is something that sounds to me like an obvious quote from the Hebrew Themes.
It happened to me before both in composition and mostly in improvisation that I quoted something withgout knowing it is a quote, only to find later. Did Poulenc quote the Hebrew Themes on purpose or just a coincidence?

Thanks.

The Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet and Piano, Op. 34 was written in 1919.

The Sonata for Clarinet and Piano was written in 1962, one year before Poulenc's death ...GBK

many pieces quote from here and there- usually the less obvious it is the more effective it is. For example, when Zemlinsky halts the action in the middle of the slow mvt of his clarinet/cello trio to blatantly quote the Dvorak Cello concerto (which he had heard earlier that year).... it's a little trite to our modern ears (though i really like this trio).
of course, the less obvious a quote is, the less clear it is whether it was deliberate or not.

charlie parker was a master at quoting all kinds of things during his solos (even woody the woodpecker once).

He quoted Louis Armstrong's opening cadenza from the West End Blues during a concert performance of all the things you are (I think, I should look it up)

"the less obvious a quote is, the less clear it is whether it was deliberate or not."

In that case, the Poulenc quote of the Hebrew Themes was definitely on purpose.

I don't believe it's a quote. Just something that sounds familiar to your ear. Can you give the exact bar number?

Well I'm not going to count (don't have the sheet music) but it is twice (with the second time being a little longer) in the first 50 seconds in the recording I have which is by Sharon Kam.
Maybe you are right and it is not a quote, but the last thing I want is to start an arguement whether it's a quote or not. For me it sounds like a quote and a really good one. If it's not a quote, still sounds great!
The piano part is pretty jumpy but on those moments where the quote is the piano sounds suddenly very mystrious for a second which makes sound like the Hebrew Themes even more.
Anyway, quote or no quote, it's a great piece.
