I'm currently playing the clarinet book for a production of RAGTIME in the SF area and my colleague was wondering how much Eb there is in broadway shows. i couldn't come up with a vast list, but here are the ones i could think of. maybe john moses could help out on this one too.

Ragtime
A Chorus Line
Company

Phantom of the Opera, according to my friend's program. I don't know if there was one on the OCR, though.

Just played three perfromances of RAGTIME (Bb & effer) last month with no rehearsal (subbed for another clarinetist) and had fun. Hope you enjoy your run as well.

Hi woodwind650:
I'm glad you're interested in the Eb clarinet on Broadway. I've been encouraging composers and orchestrators to write for that wonderful little clarinet for over 35+ years now!
Suffice it to say, the little fellow can be found in many of our Broadway pits.
I use it quite a bit in WICKED, which is currently in it's second year at the Gershwin Theater. I've used the Eb in: TITANIC, CRAZY FOR YOU, JANE EYRE, FIDDLER, INTO THE WOODS, NINE, SWEENEY TODD, PHANTOM, THE PRODUCERS, MISS SAIGON, CANDIDE, GRIND, JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, CAMELOT, ON THE TOWN, WEST SIDE STORY, and RAGTIME, just to name a few. And yes, it is needed for A CHORUS LINE, in the Reed 2 book.
There are dozens of new and older Broadway shows that feature the Eb clarinet, and I am one of the many NYC musicians who enjoy playing it anywhere I'm asked.
Good luck with your Eb efforts,

JJM

The Company part is double scored in the Reed I or Reed II book in the original production parts (1960's-1970's) and in the shows that I did, the player on that book just wanted to do it on the Bb horn. I managed to convince the musical director to pass it over to me on a couple of productions.

It is easier to play on the little horn ("more musical", unless you consider the nature of the twenty bar twice repeated part, which is kind of wheezy the way it is written). However, toting the extra box around for the limited effect that you add is probably why it's usually played on the Bb.

It's of a piece with the single number use of the Eb "contra-alto" horn in On The Twentieth Century, only the drayage is about one twentieth as severe.

I have been told that Cats is being reorchestrated again. Last year, 2004, the only available orchestration was 2 ww, trumpet, horn, electric bass, electric guitar, percussion, and three keyboards, each driving several Kurzwiel 2600 modules. Apparently there were enough complaints that ALW is having another orchestration done. The original was on Broadway forever, I would have assumed that meant the orchestrations was ok.
