I was just wondering if having braces affects playing clarinet or alto saxophone in any way.

I hated playing with braces! They hurt my lower lip because of the pressure, and I couldn't, or refused to tongue because of the discomfort. My embouchure was screwed up so my tone suffered.

If you follow your orthodontists directions, however, like I did, you will be out of your braces in 18 months. These instructions include: no chewing gum, caramel, or hard candy with braces on. You will have to readjust once again once the braces come off, but you feel so much better. You look better too!

Good luck, and happy playing.

Hey-
I played clarinet AND alto saxophone for 4 years, with braces, and just got them off 2 weeks ago! The braces will be really difficult at first, but you'll adjust, and re-adjust as your mouth changes because of the braces. Don't let them stop you!

Hallie-
You play with SHJO? I looked at your AOL profile. I am in your section, 2nd Clarinet.
