 Reading Vs. Ear Changes Practice

I've finally started reading sheet music. Today was my first day back at what I consider a chore because I was never good at it with the guitar or piano and here I am trying to master it with the clarinet.

So, I started playing really easy pieces today in the lower register and staying within the open G and the C just below it. In about 20 minutes, my face was killing me. Now, when I play by ear and just whip out some jazz bits, I can play for an hour or more before I can't feel my face anymore. What gives?

My guess would be tension as in trying too hard.

Either that, or the music is in a bad place and is distorting your posture. Never play with music flat on the table in front of you. If you don't have a music stand, prop your music up on the open clarinet case.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

It's the stress of reading that's changing the amt of pressure you are playing with.

I have a student who's played for many years who just started taking lessons and is also learning to read. (played by ear before).

He can play something by ear no problem, but the same song reading he gets a lot more tense and it shows in his playing.

Remember to stay relaxed - it's supposed to be fun.
