an encyclopaedia is the best place to start. After that, Jack Brymer's book (I forget the name, but easily findable) has some excellent historical discussion.
you may be interested to find that historically speaking, the clarinet is quite a recent member of the ww section of the orchestra....it's not doin' too bad for a kid...:)
another thing....clarinets (and wind instruments in general) are still in flux in terms of design improvements, etc....the violin, on the other hand, was perfected as we know it several centuries ago!!!
