 Dribbling?
Author: Aussiegirl

My new teacher changed my embochure at the start of this semester (9ish weeks ago), but in the last 2 weeks or so ive found that when i play i dribble either out the sides of my mouth and also down my chin a little bit. This also happens when i play bari sax. At the moment ive got a rash at the very corners of my mouth from the saliva (i think) and its getting pretty sore...has this happened to anybody else? Any remedies for it?

If this were happening to me, AussieGirl, I believe I'd have already had a talk with my teacher a week ago. If your lessons are more than a week apart it might be a good idea to call or drop by and ask your teacher about it *soon*. There's no advantage to hurting yourself. A good, well developed embouchure should not cause that kind of discomfort. Possibly you're playing/(practicing) too long at a time? Talk to you teacher.

Saliva will naturally be produced when you play clarinet. If you don't swallow it it will either go into the horn or out the sides of your mouth. Does this make sense? Try swallowing occasionally.

Are you keeping your head more or less vertical? If you bend your head down, then the saliva will collect at your lips more easily, instead of out of the way behind your lower teeth, under your tongue.

Swallow it whenever you can.
Males are reputed to produce more saliva than females. Hmm.

Are the sides of your mouth brought in? If so, maybe those side muscles aren't too developed yet. A few minutes of double lipping would let you feel how much the sides can be brought up snug to the mouthpiece.

Oh, and for now you could try using a good chap stick or cream along the sides of your mouth AFTER playing - clean and rinse the area well, then apply the chap stick to trap in moisture. If that doesn't do the trick a chat with the pharmasist should assist in finding something that works.
