Desperately Seeking Bass Clarinet Teacher (NYC/LI area)
Author: bass_on_treble

I hope this is the right place for this, but I've been looking all over the place for the last year now for a teacher for lessons. I'm a music ed major at Queens College in the Aaron Copland School of Music and my major instrument is bass clarinet. So far I've only been directed to musicians who have been touring and won't take on students or students at my school that are mainly clarinetists. I've been playing seriously for a few years now (before that my primary instrument was tenor sax for a few years even though I started on regular B-flat clarinet at age 9.)

Depending on distance and location, traveling isn't really an issue, though I'd prefer someone in Nassau county or in Queens, Suffolk or Manhattan are fine. I play on a Selmer 37 that I've had for the last year and while I don't feel like I have any significant skill levels I'm very eager to improve on my instrument and I'd really like to have help in selecting repetoire.

If anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated, if either they'd consider giving lessons or know someone that maybe could.
Thanks in advance!
-Rebecca Hyams

Try Michael Lowenstern. He's in Brooklyn and you can contact him by going to his website at www.earspasm.com Mike's the BEST bass clarinet player I know and has taught at NYU, Julliard and elsewhere. Tell him what you're looking for and see if he can help.

Michael

A few of the other top bass clarinet players in NYC are Dennis Smylie, Jim Ognibene of the Met orchestra, and Brian Hysong of the City Ballet.

Hello,

Jim Ognibene and Brian Hysong would be great. If you call them, please tell them hello for me.

If you're not advanced enough to want to study with these people, then go to Juilliard, sweet talk your way through the turnstile, (not always easy to do) and post a sheet with your number and what you want. I'm sure a student there would love to take on a new student.

Good luck.

Also try David Hattner, Meighan Stoops, or Bohdan Hilash. All are monsters on the instrument. Email me if you want their contact info.
