 Recommendations?

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good used clarinet source. I am just beginning my freshman year of college and my clarinet professor said "You got this far playing this?" when he looked at my beloved Noblet series 40.

He suggested a Buffet R-13, so that's what I'm specifically looking for, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them.

I live in Mount Pleasant, MI, so if anyone knows of a good music store nearby that would be great. I wouldn't mind ordering online either as long as it was from a real store, not eBay.

Thanks!

Check with Eric Satterlee at Meridian Winds (Haslett). The last number I had for Eric is 517.339.7333. He may be able to provide a top quality used instrument. I just sold a fantastic R13 #111XXX series.

A look at the BB Classifieds may yeild a lead or two as well.

E-bay is not a bad source. You don't get to play them first obviously, but the R-13s go relatively cheaply. I just bought an R-13 off ebay (my first as well) for $850. Received it yesterday and am very happy. One of the pads is leaking like a seive though which prevents me from playing many of the notes on the lower joint. But, I checked the notes on the tuner and A-OK. No cracks or ships, nice fine grained wood, nice keys.....it really has great potential. I am actually sending to John Butler who comes highly recommended on these boards to have a full spa treatment done on it. When it comes back, its gonna be sweet. Full price for everything, including overhaul should come to about $1250. Considering new ones go for $1800 to $2200, I am pretty happy with the deal.

I vote for contacting Dave Spiegelthal on this BB. Check the Classifieds,he might have something current listed, or fire him an e-Mail. Good honest solid recommendations in the event he has nothing on the shelf right now.

There are some "real" stores on eBay. And there are some sellers who say they will guarantee their items.

Also check with John Butler. You can reach his site by clicking on the Service box on the right of this page. He does very good work and usually has some rebuilt clarinets listed for sale. Both Spiegelthal and Butler are very reliable sources.

Thanks everybody, I found a nice used R-13 for sale in my hometown and am going up today to try it out.

If it doesn't pan out, I'll certainly try some of the resources you all suggested.

Thank you!

Like always I will recommend not buying clarinets online. It is always better to try it first to see if you like it. I really hope the clarinet you found will be good (if possible have your teacher try it too) so you don't have to worry about ordering online.
