Given the fantastic response I got on the "Favorite New Concerto" thread (found some really cool stuff through it!) and the fact that I've just joined a wind quintet... The repertoire can get a bit repetitive for such an ensemble, so I'd like to spruce things up a bit.
What are some new and/or obscure quintet pieces you enjoy? Something other than the usual Ibert, Milhaud, Reicha, Arnold, Taffanel, etc.
Thanks!
-Alex

Nielsen's wind quintet is good from what I remember - it was on the radio when I was driving to work late one morning!
Oh yeah, and the oboist doubles on cor anglais in one movement.

Nielsen is nice but seems not simple.
The same for '6 Bagatels' from Ligeti, great music but some parts are tricky.
Playable and an absolute classic : Early Hongarian dances from Ferenc Farkas
Very nice and relative easy : 5 Easy dances from Agay
Reicha's opus 88 n° 2 is Great.
Milhaud (La Cheminé du roi René) is playable but rather special to listen to.
The above all are originally written for WQt. We also found a very nice adaptation of Schubert's "Trouth Quintet Variations"
and then there is plenty adaptations of about every famous melody ever written.

The Harbison and Schuller Quintets are very challenging.

I really like Paquito diRivera's Aires Tropicale. I also happen to like the wind quintets I've written :^)
Oh, and Samuel Barber's Summer Music is a great quintet too. This one is considered a "standard" but I hardly ever hear it played.

Have a look at the George Dreyfus "Quintet after the Notebook of J. G. Noverre" (but only if your horn player is an absolute monster). Approx difficulty = Harbison. Fantastic piece, though.

barber's "summer music" quintet is a definite standard, but the reason it's not played is because of the tremendous difficulty of getting the piece together. 7/16 bars? Those trill-run tradeoffs between flute and clarinet? yikes

Thanks for the input... I'll look into those. We're meeting for the first time this week and will read through a bunch of the repertoire we do have. I'll find clips (thanks for those, Peter) of the stuff listed here and try to get scores of the ones I like that we don't have.
That is, until I write my own over winter break
Keep the suggestions coming!
