Anyone know a single clarinet case that has the flexibility of design, to house either a Bb or an A clar safely? This has arisen because my next orchestral concert will be for A clar only, and I'm also doing Brahms and Fruhling Trios later in the year.
Yes, yes, I know, I could leave the Bb out of my double case and that's fair, but it's a big double case.

Weismann (in UK I believe) makes custom indestructible cases out of tubular aircraft aluminum to any specifications, although you may pay more for the case than the instrument!
I have seen a Buffet S1 A for sale in a single case, same as my 1980's-vintage R13 Bb case (brown leather trapezoidal-cross-section variety). I don't know if they still make such a thing, or the updated equivalent.

I have an old "pochette" style "A" clarinet case, the kind that's quite thin and has a slight flare at the right end for the bell --- I suppose one could lay in a small piece of foam at the end of each of the long sections in order to block in a Bb clarinet, but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort.

Take a look at the Yamaha soft sided double case. It's not much bigger than
a single case and very light.

Problem with the older Buffet (Winter) plastic cases was the latch - the part that the latch locks onto fell out in most cases I've seen, leaving the case flapping open.
The newer case with the flat top and two latches is more sound.
I think they're around the £30 mark - the A case being £1 more than the Bb case from what I remember.

Easy fix....just wrap an old leather belt around it....or velcro.

OK thanks for input everyone and thanks Mike for link. Will follow up.
Had a thought that I'll modify a Bb case for A and construct end caps to stabilise Bb. One problem is that not all A clarinets differ from their Bb partners in the same way. eg some have longer upper joints, some longer lower joints and presumably some bells are slightly different.
As a dentist, I have access to materials (for impressions) that are strong, hygienic yet flexible. Watch this space.....but don't hold your breath.
