These past few weeks I've noticed that my clarinet (E11) has become dull and lifeless. I try to make my playing more characteristic of the clarinet but it doesn't seem to be working. I felt that I was making excellant progress the past 3 years but now it feels like I've hit a plateau. Is my clarinet too amateur? Is it my oral cavity? If it helps at all my set up is VD 4 Rue Lepic reeds, VD Optimum Lig, Gigliotti 2 MP. Thanks in advance; I'd really like to get out of this rut!

The E-11 doesn't have the sound of the R-13. I'd get a better Clarinet. What has probably happened is that your standards have matured and you are hitting a "wall".
Your VD #4 sounds a bit hard. I'd try using the 3.5+ possibly.
If you've got the $$$, upgrade to a professional model (several models and brands are out there, you've got to make the final decision on what works best for you).

clarinetinwi,
IMO a relatively sudden change like that could be caused by a change in the instrument. I would have it checked by a good repair technician.

In the interests of horses and not zebras, possibly the heat/humidity is necessitating a change in reed. Not uncommon in the summer.

Like she said, start with the essential (and least expensive) remedy...
without the reed, it's just a lamp in the making.
