 Dixieland Friends /scales

My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans and to any of our board members suffering through this tragedy.

Our public radio has been playing lots of wonderful music from New Orleans and Louisiana the past few days. My father was from New Orleans and I owe my love of clarinet to his obsession with Pete Fountain. My daughter recently sang in New Orleans with a group of choirs from around the country. They sang at one of this countries oldest and most beautiful cathedrals, which I understand is now knee deep in water. She will never forget the experience - the beauty and acoustics of that building left her choir in tears.

I don't really write so well, but I feel like playing a little music (not that I do much better at that). Are there common scales in Dixieland? Where should I start? Does anyone else feel like playing a tune?

The major scale will treat you fine for most purposes. Just start playing. "The Saints" and "Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans" both start on the root note. "Just a Closer Walk" starts on the 5th note.

Even better would be to make a contribution to the redcross:

http://www.redcross.org or 1-800-HELPNOW.

Then go play Flee as a Bird.
