In 1960, Rudolf Jettel was still principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic together with Alfred Prinz, who became principal cl. in the State Opera (the orchestra that all members of the Vienna Phil. must be employed by) in 1945 at the age of 15. In 1955 Prinz was appointed the principal chair also in the Philharmonic Orchestra.
When Jettel retired in 1968, Peter Schmidl took his place. Schmidl is the third generation of his family to be pr. clarinet in this orchestra. Both his father, Viktor and his grandfather Alois, have had the same position. Peter, who is a student of Jettel's, joined the orchestra in 1965 as 2nd clarinet.
One interesting chain of tradition is maybe worth mentioning to americans:
Schmidl studied with Rudolf Jettel. Prinz studied with Leopold Wlach, another legendary principal clarinetist of the orchestra as most people know. Both Jettel and Wlach studied with Viktor Pollatschek, another 1st cl. of the same orchestra. In 1930, Pollatschek moved from Vienna to Boston and joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Alfred Prinz recently retired as principal cl(summer of 1995) of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. Peter Schmidl has since taken his place. For more information on Alfred Prinz, there is a good article in the November-December 1995 issue of The Clarinet. Most university libraries should have the magazine or maybe your teacher.
