How many Round needle and Flat Needle Springs are there on the Clarinet? (any repair techs know that off hand?)
I know different brands may have different types/numbers, but how about for a Selmer or a Buffet Clarinet - how many?

I've been taking apart an old clarinet for fun and there are exactly:
1) not very many flat springs
2) a lot of round springs

D B, Why do you want to know??? When I have problems, I SURE go to our pro-repairers, who know what they are doing, not me !! On my recent Selmer Omega USA, I count 5 flats and 6 needles on the U J, 7 needles on the L J. Prob. all diff sizes ! Don

Depending on the model/make/system there are 4 to 7or8 flat springs, as few as four round springs (Simple System) and up to 10 or more on complex mechanisms. You'll also find tiny coil springs on some models, usually three of them, one each for the register, A key and Ab/G# keys.

Buffet R13
Flat springs (6/7*): [all on upper joint]
Register Key
Four side (trill keys)
A key
(*C# on older Buffets 110XXX and under)
Round springs:
5 on upper joint [unless older Buffet, then there will be four)
7 on lower joint
Most student models have a round spring on the A key of the upper joint instead of a flat spring, adjust totals accordingly.

Not to mention the coil springs for the throat A on some Yamahas, and the coil spring for the C#/G# on some Vitos.
Some of the older Selmers had a flat spring under the RH F#/C# touch.
Selmer 10Gs had a ridiculous amount of springs, including a needle spring for the thumb ring and flat springs on both LH levers - the F#/C# lever being a strange key to add a flat spring to as it needs to be bent to clear the barrels, and any double action in this lever (and there should be some) is more pronounced as the spring keeps this lever against the body and not loose like other makes, and others that don't have the pins through the key arm.

Ok. I DO have a selmer 10G, so here's the verdict on what I can see . . .
Flat springs - 6
Register
A key
Four side trill keys
Needle Springs - 12
5 on upper joint
7 on lower joint
I guess this is further evidence that the 10G would be copied after a Moeneggized R13 since JButler counted the same on the R13s.

PS - Chris, I didn't see a needle spring for the thumb ring. Although maybe you're talking about a different series of 10G

Ok, I'll let you off the hook......
A student came in with an old Selmer Signet that all of the springs were rusty. She had just bought it from a local music store and I wanted to see if they would adjust the price based on the springs condition.
Being able to say "there are 26 springs which need replacing" sounds better than "the springs need to be replaced".
Sorry if I annoyed you (evil grin attached......)

TKS, David, for letting us know the point to this exercise, I'm sure it is not all in vain. I've come to the [simple-minded] conclusion that the # of springs must be at least equal to the # of keys, 17 to 20, on our [soprano, open hole] Boehms. There are likely always a few more [duplicated,as on the left L F, F/C touch, possibly on the thumb ring {perhaps}], and "opposing" spring actions, as on Full Boehms artic C#/G# etc. The ring "stacks"need special consideration, and on making a count on a "plateau" key horn, altos and larger, more yet are needed and present, for playability. I'll bet that our pro-repairers are alternately laughing/griping about all of this "thrashing-around" by us [myself included] amateurs. GBK/MC please delete/edit this if its too far afield. Don

Personally, I would have connected my eyes to my brain, brought out the loupe, and counted them to get an exact count for that model rather than ask for a generic number on a BBoard ...
But some people think I'm way too practical.
