I am now in the process of restoring a P-M Artist model Eb clarinet (serial #M1304E) with silver keys, joint and barrel rings. However, I need the upper barrel ring and bell ring which are missing. Does anyone know a source for replacements? Its turning out to be a beautiful horn. I can't wait to play it. Does anyone know something more about these clarinets? -ss-

Penzel-Mueller was a very good American clarinet manufacturer, nearly comparable (IMHO) with the better French brands. The "Artist" is, I think, their top-of-the-line, so your eefer should be well worth restoring. Can't help you with the barrel and bell rings, although you might try Ferree's Tools (http://www.ferreestools.com/) -- they frequently have or can find replacment parts.

Ferree's puts out a newsletter that occassionally lists parts, for sale, exchange, etc., but not often what Sylvan is looking for. They're geared more to the tools and supplies end of the business. Your best bet would be a local repair shop.
You might also try posting to EarlyClarinet where you'll find lots of restorers who may be more likely to help you with this or can direct you to a source.
Sounds like you're doing a good job, Sylvan, and I hope you locate those items soon. Penzel Mueller horns are good instruments. I think you'll be pleased with it.

Dear SS: I have a Penzel-Mueller E-flat clarinet with the serial number 17131 and the initials L.P. printed just above the A/G# left-hand index-finger keys. It's probably older than yours since that L.P. indication was usually etched into instruments in the 1920's (and/or '30's), but I'm not sure about that! Anyway, it's a great instrument. It did not need restoring, only airing-out since it's very old case was very mouldy. I found it in the classified section of the Austin-American Statesman about seven years ago for $90! I use a Peter Spriggs e-flat barrel and soprano clarinet (black-master 'cause they're more narrow) reeds. The Spriggs barrel has no rings. The rings on the barrel that came with this instrument get in the way of a standard size soprano clarinet reed; so, before I acquired the Spriggs barrel, I simply removed the top ring.
Penzel-Mueller was a fabulous US clarinet manufacturer who's instruments were highly prized and well-respected for many, many years. I had one of the B-flat PM's during the war that I sold in London for $100 US before buying a Selmer
"N" series in Paris for $75 US!
I once had a new Buffet E-flat clarinet that was great, but it's open G was quite low in pitch. You can hear that one on "Berceuse du Chat", "Mavra" and "Integrales", recorded long ago. One of my pupils wrote me about her new Buffet E-flat and said that it's great. They're wonderful clarinets with a distinctive sound. I'm sure your "Artist" model PM is a gem, too. I'd suggest that you contact Peter Spriggs re the barrel and bell ring problem too. His web site is right here on Sneezy.org. All the very best! ET
