I've found a beautiful used Selmer lowC bass clarinet in my local music shop, and I would like to knowt it's age. The serial # is A3582. The list on this site puts it after 1978 - can anybody be more specific?? The horn seems to be in good shape, and sounds wonderful. Are there any specific problem areas I should be on the lookout for? They are asking about $4000 Canadian. The new Selmer 37's are listed at $10 000 CDN, so this sounds pretty reasonable to me. Are the latestest horns any better / different?

Sounds about right for that age of Selmer.
I borrowed one of my teacher's basses, from that time frame, for a rehearsal while the other one i was using was in the shop. I couldn't use it because i had to play scalar runs to low C and the key layout for the extended range notes didn't work well. Plus you HAVE to press the low Eb key while playing the extended range and there's pinky key for low D. I think the newer Selmers within the last 10 years are the best they've made, both for intonation and key configuration.

Daniel, this horn has a different key layout. There's no pinky key for low D, and I don't think you need to use the low Eb key for the bottom notes.
Do the key patterns differ between new Selmers & Buffets? Can someone tell me about the different layouts, and which seem to work best?
