I remember one of my friends had a clarinet mouthpiece that was especially made for playing loudly. Ithad some metal thing in the mouthpiece. I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but can someone tell me what it is and if it doesn't exist, please correct me.

If you're looking to play louder, I've read some good things about the "power barrel" from Doc Henderson (Doctor's Products is the link and one of our sponsored under "Accesories" to the right).
Best part about that would be that you can continue to use whatever mouthpiece you like on it.

Whenever I perform with a microphone, it seems at first like it's set at a fine volume level, but when I listen to a recording of it, the mic is always way too hot.

Tyler - that problem is just part of the nature of amplifying and recording. When you are recording something, you want something fairly close to even levels from all your different sources. For amplifying, some sources (like your clarinet) need to be turned up much higher to balance with the rest of the instruments. Usually, a live recording will need two mixers. One for amplification, and one for recording.

I remember a sax mouthpiece that had an additional reed inside the mouthpiece....perhaps it was by Runyon....It could be that he made a clarinet mouthpiece of similar design. John

yes the spoiler! more of santys genius . i use this clarinet mpc with the metal insert for dixie land playing .its great! if you want a great jazz mpc -get a runyon custom spoiler. ideal for bigband work too

So must one have a Runyon mpc for a spoiler to work? I'm using a Vandoren 5JB. I like my mpc and am too broke to buy a new mpc just for a piece of metal.
